Where Do We Go From Here?
Bush is urging Americans to
conserve fuel while Boston legislators are pushing a bill that will reward drivers of hybrid or alternative fuel cars. Mitt wants an
investigation into gas price gouging and maybe a price cap. Mass Electric is thinking of raising their rates by 27%.
What are we trying to accomplish?
Do we want to reduce fossil fuel usage? If
so then we're doing a great job. We lost 20% of our fuel production in the hurricane. Let's leave it like that. We've now cut back our
fuel consumption, right?
Do we want cheaper prices? Well we need more oil to
increase supply and reduce demand. So let's drill the crap out of Alaska and set up a crap load of oil wells off the coast of Florida.
Right?
Do we want to be more fuel efficient? Ok, let's build cars that get 100
miles to the gallon. Now every one can afford one since fuel is one of the biggest cost in owning a car. Now everyone can go on long
rood trips and burn more fuel than we do now.
Somewhere down the line we need to come to a bigger conclusion, fossil fuel
needs to go away. Car companies need to stop dragging their feet when it comes to solar powered & hydrogen powered automobiles.
Investments have to be made into building fueling stations for alternative fuel.
On the flip side of the coin, Americans need
to stop shooting themselves in the foot. Commuting times and distances are increasing yearly, traffic and congestion are also
increasing every year, while drivers purchase larger and larger vehicles for those very same commutes. A civic is a great car, why trade
it in for a large suv only to then commute 2 hours a day in congested traffic?
